HATTIE CARTHAN (1900 – 1984) was an environmentalist who worked hard to beautify Bed-Stuy. In 1964, only 3 trees were alive on her block, so she began to organize her neighbors and community to raise funds and plant trees. Throughout her life, she was responsible for the planting of 1,500 trees in Bed-Stuy through the block associations she managed. She also campaigned to save a 40-foot magnolia tree by designating it as a city landmark, which is now over 100 years old.
